British Airways has just announced that they will be introducing a new electronic baggage tag system. The electronic tag can be updated via a smartphone. The details of how this will be achieved are a little vague but we really like the idea of replacing paper printed barcode labels. Barcode scanning technologies are advancing at a rapid rate (excuse the pun as it is all in the aid of rapid and repeatable scanning) and new readers (including smartphone readers) are popping up all the time. The labels (or what is being scanned) remain the only aspect of barcoding that has remained rather unchanged. Having an update-able label and the opportunity to save a few trees in the process of re-barcoding really gets our tails wagging!
