Photo Of The Day

Whenever the trials of life start getting me down or if I find myself in some kind of existential funk (Ron Burgundy) I normally watch an extreme sports, fly-fishing or mountain bike DVD and I am immediately back in the proverbial game. I draw so much inspiration from guys following their passions and living a life not dictated by illogical societal “norms”. I often check out http://www.bikemag.com for said inspiration and normally find it in their photo of the day. I have decided that you should also share in the liberation that comes from viewing these amazing pic’s and so I will be posting one of their pictures each day until we have more of our own pictures to post. Live inspired!

Ultimate Sports Nutrition

Nutrition is going to be key to me successfully riding a single geared bicycle over 1500 km… uphill, and I am more than ecstatic to announce that USN (Ultimate Sports Nutrition is what it stands for) has officially jumped on board the One Gear bus (there isn’t  actually a bus – that’s the next sponsorship we will be looking to secure, but you get the proverbialness of the statement). USN has already got amazingly involved and is currently putting together a plan to ensure that I am all nutritioned up both for the extensive training I am going to have to do as well as for the ride itself!

A massive thank you to Albe the CEO of USN for giving the go ahead without much hesitation and to Trevor Allen for putting together my plan and supplying me with the amazing USN products!

First 50

Not the first 50 km of training but the first time for this initiative that I have completed a 50 km ride on the BMX – I am writing this from the couch where I intend spending the rest of the day…

Magnificent Michael

Michael Nurcombe-Thorne just threw R1000 at the One Gear cause! and I don’t mean in anyway to diminish his efforts by implying that he has loads of cash to just “throw” around. What I meant was that he didn’t think twice! He is hence magnificent! … also I really struggled to find an alternative word to create some appropriate alliteration. Magnificent Michael!

Kyalami

Kyalami means “my home” in Zulu. I can tell you that it didn’t feel like my home when I was riding up the mineshaft, which strangely enough reappears each time you do another lap. I was not trying to be a hero by overtaking geared bikes as I went up it…it’s just that with the BMX you only have 2 choices;  get going or get off. Naturally I got going…it may have been a bit cheeky to look back and smile Lance Armstrong style as I did it though…

I don’t know Francisco Andre

Francisco Andre is a guy I have never met…and he has just donated R1000 to the One Gear cause! I began One Gear as a way for me to expel what I thought were altruistic charitable energies but I realize  now that no effort is truly altruistic. You always get something out of it for yourself.  This whole initiative has not only been educational for me but is now proving to be an extremely humbling and inspirational experience too! Thank you Francisco!

Second Sponsor

Our first sponsor took the last stage and now our second sponsor has taken the first stage! You do the math. We are all kinds of giddy with excitement that iScrip has joined the One Gear cause and has not only sponsored this first stage but have committed to sponsoring another 2 stages as well; that’s a total of 3 stages (I’ll do the math).  GIDDY!

Laps

Laps of the same 5km route = monotonous (or replace with any of the following: repetitious, tedious or mind-numbing). I did what I could to make it more exciting and attempted to shave time on each progressive lap by hitting apexes tighter and tucking in on downhills…forgetting at moments that I have spent more of my life in adulthood than in childhood. Childhood is funner – fact!

Cath’s Contribution

Catherine Mary Egbers or Cath Dog as I like to call her, just donated R500 to One Gear! Thanks Cathmeister (that’s also what I like to call her)! She made the donation while travelling and unemployed giving the rest of you who haven’t yet contributed pretty much no excuse – Get on it!
